The Airbnb window opens directly to the New York restaurant

NEW YORK (NEXSTAR) – Talk about a great location for restaurants and bars nearby! A visitor to New York discovered that her hotel room, booked through Airbnb, literally shared a window with a Japanese restaurant, allowing her to peek at customers eating.

The woman, who identified herself as Desiree Baker, first shared the eerie experience on TikTok earlier this week, noting the difference between the actual room and the listing online, which reportedly pointed to a bedroom facing the city.

“I roll the blinds, there are no buildings,” she explains to her TikTok subscribers. “We are in a restaurant. Let me show you. “

As seen in the clip, Baker raises the shadow and nervously watches a couple having dinner from across the glass. Diners, however, cannot see Baker due to a reflective coating on the other side, she later finds out.

“I would have screamed the first time when I opened the blinds,” wrote one viewer in response to the video.

“YOU’RE COMPLAINING ABOUT ME” exclaimed another.

“Omg I would be LIVID !!!!” added another.

Baker also demonstrated in later clips that she could open the restaurant window, and did so later to return the cocktail glasses she had brought back to her room. “HOW IS IT LEGAL,” she captioned a video, which has since been viewed over 9 million times on TikTok. “You literally can’t make it up. “

After his stay, Baker identified both the hotel and the restaurant on TikTok. As noted by Eater NYC, the restaurant appears to have been built on an outdoor patio with a retractable roof, indicating that Baker’s bedroom window may have once opened onto an outdoor space.

Baker, meanwhile, claimed she was contacted by Airbnb after seeing her viral video on TikTok. She said they offered her a credit for a future stay, which “suited her well”. An Airbnb representative said they were working to “support the customer” and that the hotel operator, Cassa Studios, was under investigation by the company.

In a statement shared with Nexstar, the hotel operator further claimed that guests in “terrace rooms” were warned in advance. “As is the case in much of the city, we have to deal with the constraints of a building with an unusual floor plan,” read a statement from hotel manager Cassa Studios, Yulia Letenko. “Only six of our 86 rooms face the terrace, and our policy is to place guests in these rooms only when none are available, or on request. These rooms are offered at a reduced price, customers are informed in advance of the restaurant, and we allow customers who stay in these rooms to move out as soon as another room becomes available. Many guests who stay in our terrace rooms appreciate being able to have a discounted option close to popular tourist destinations.
