Queensland soldiers quarantined at “dedicated” hotel in Melbourne
The Victorian government was forced to quarantine more than 60 Australian soldiers in a Melbourne hotel after confusion over why they could not self-isolate at their Queensland base.
Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath on Wednesday accused the federal government of spreading “false claims” that the state would not let in up to 400 Queensland soldiers who were sent to Afghanistan for the mass evacuation effort. A hotel in Queensland has been reserved for soldiers returning from the Australian military base in Dubai and Ms D’Ath said there was “no doubt” that they would be allowed to self-quarantine in her state.
However, The Sydney Morning Herald and Age can reveal that 62 Queensland-based soldiers who had passed through Victoria’s hotel quarantine system are not quarantined in their home state. Instead, they entered their 14-day isolation period at a “dedicated hotel” in Melbourne last Thursday.
Under Queensland health rules, soldiers who have helped states facing COVID-19 outbreaks are allowed to quarantine themselves at their base, but Defense has never requested an exemption from the Queensland government .
A COVID-19 spokesperson Quarantine Victoria said he was working with the ADF to support the 62 soldiers in need of quarantine accommodation before returning to their military base in Queensland.
“These ADF members have worked across our hotel network, supporting our program with airport arrivals, hotel transfers and a range of COVID-19 compliance measures,” the door said. -speak.
The Melbourne hotel they self-isolate in was to be decommissioned as a quarantine facility because it had one of the lowest quality ventilation systems in the state, but the Victorian government had to keep it open to quarantine ADF members before they return to Queensland.
A spokesperson for Queensland Health said military personnel are still allowed to enter Queensland and self-quarantine on a base, property owned or designated by the ADF, or quarantined at the hotel.
