Hannibal Airbnb expands to build new event space

HANNIBAL (WGEM) – Charlie Phillips and his wife Laurel took on a big project in 2018 when they transformed a dilapidated house into an Airbnb called the Quarry House.

They get their hands dirty again transforming the outdoor space behind the building.

They plan to turn it into a new event space including a stage, courtyard, pavilion and patio.

“I really think it will drive business and bring numbers and bring people, not just to Hannibal but to the South Side,” Charlie said.

They want to hold events like weddings and private concerts in the space.

“The courtyard would be great for you know, dancing, dining, etc., but we really wanted to offer something on the south side of Hannibal that was very, very stylish but very affordable,” Charlie said.

Charlie also plans to open a bar inside a cave he discovered on the property.

Maria Kuhns, an entrepreneurship specialist with the Hannibal Regional Economic Development Council, said their expansion can impact the surrounding region.

“We’re hoping to attract more people not just to the downtown area but along 79 and the south side area, so hopefully that will have a lot of different benefits for many of our downtown businesses. -city,” Kuhns said.

Kuhns said the Quarry House has been a great addition for the south side of town.

“They’ve made it into something that’s a great business for our community and for them and so it’s just been fun,” Kuhns said.

Charlie said they can do small events like weddings or reunions in about 2 months.

He said he wanted to complete the entire project in October, but labor shortages could push that back to spring 2023.
