Waves of infections, changing protocols and postponed flights are just a handful of realities people face when traveling during the pandemic. Even during “normal” times, travel isn’t always straightforward, and with a plethora of moving parts, every vacation comes with risk. But those risks have multiplied with Covid, and travel planning has become more complicated.

Enter the travel agent or, as it is more often called nowadays, the travel counselor. They’re organizers, destination experts and a 24-hour concierge who can tailor a trip, reschedule, reschedule, and even prevent a memorable vacation from falling apart.

“Whether it’s a flight cancellation, problems in a hotel or an unexpected illness, a travel professional can quickly step in and assess the situation, then overcome all obstacles to find a solution,” explains David Harris, CEO of Ensemble, headquartered in North America. Travel Group and previously owner of a second generation travel agency. “It has never been more evident than during the pandemic.”

While travel portals such as Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia Group have exploded over the past decade – with many people taking the initiative to plan their own vacations – websites and apps cannot replace one. individual offering personalized advice or organizing a tailor-made experience. . And the jetsetters agree. In 2021 in particular, travel agencies are booming.

“After going through the most brutal year in more than 20 years since I started the business, I have seen a staggering rebound in the past six months,” said Casey Halloran, co-founder and CEO of Costa Rican Luxury Vacations, a company designing high-end tailor-made trips to Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua. “Now that travel has new barriers, ever-changing rules and mild anxiety, agents are able to add even more value to travelers. ”

Halloran explains that specifically for pandemic travel, advisers help gather destination Covid statistics, information on entry and exit requirements and local regulations, not to mention protocols at hotels, advice on travel insurance and contingency plans for worst-case scenarios.

“As all of these factors change, it’s a great agent’s job to be constantly in the know, to filter out the noise and to keep the customer informed,” he adds. A reputable travel agent should help their customers “understand the risks, mitigate them as best we can, and help them feel comfortable to travel responsibly again.”

In an era of a global health crisis, people who have never worked with travel counselors are turning to the pros for trip planning and personalized itineraries.

An expanding role

Travel agencies are far from new. UK-based Cox & Kings opened as the first travel agency in 1758, followed by the Abreu agency in Porto, Portugal, in 1840. Meanwhile, Thomas Cook of London made its debut. appearance a year later and Brownell Travel was launched in the United States in 1887. Beyond the pioneers, the role of the travel counselor has undeniably expanded in recent decades.

“Twenty years ago, travel agents were ‘order takers’ who mainly booked what customers told them,” says Brian Tan, CEO and co-founder of Zicasso, a luxury travel company in Mountain View. , California, which connects travelers with top travel advisors. “Today’s successful travel agents have in-depth knowledge of a destination and a Rolodex of local contacts and can personalize travel experiences. travel based on a client’s particular interests and needs – we call them “travel specialists”.

In an era of a global health crisis, people who have never worked with travel counselors are turning to the pros for trip planning and personalized itineraries. According to Tan, Zicasso has seen increased demand as a result of Covid for travel experts and the services they provide.

Likewise, Virtuoso, one of the world’s leading travel consortia with more than 1,200 agencies in more than 50 countries, has seen a 50% increase in the number of consumers looking to hire travel counselors through its network since January. . Meanwhile, other numbers are also on the rise. Third quarter bookings are up from the first two quarters of 2021, and customers are purchasing domestic and international travel through travel agents. For overseas travel in particular, advisers offer peace of mind and an increased level of security.

“In today’s travel environment, travelers are more concerned about their safety than ever before when traveling overseas,” says Andrew Williams, Houston-based travel advisor with Ovation Travel Group, a member of Virtuoso. “Avoiding the spread of the pandemic, changing environmental risks, escalating crime and other general tensions have added many complications to navigating the travel landscape. Now travelers want more support from someone they can trust in a world where things are more complex. “

Beyond the added security and convenience that comes with hiring a travel agent, there are other benefits as well. “We often have access to exclusive benefits or experiences through our global networks of suppliers and friends,” says Williams.

Piedmont, Italy. With vaccinations going on, travel as an industry is booming.

Tracy kaler

Navigate a new normal

With vaccinations going on, travel as an industry is booming, which is another reason travel agents are in high demand. Margot Kong, a San Francisco-based luxury travel curator with Travel Experts, a network of independent travel advisors and a subsidiary of Virtuoso, says she thinks there has been an increase recently because so much of the world hasn’t fully reopened, or they’ve opened with restrictions.

“You now have a lot more people competing for fewer hotel rooms, fewer tour guides and fewer airplane seats,” Kong said. As a result, vacation planning is not as easy as it used to be, and planning a vacation can take three times as long as people scour the internet and browse dozens of flight, hotel and tour options. . Then there is the possibility of travel disruptions, which are more common these days.

“Asking a travel counselor to take on this burden is very appealing to a lot of people,” she adds. “If things go wrong and a country closes, a hotel closes, or a trip or cruise needs to be canceled, the travel advisor is better equipped to help secure that refund or future travel credit,” by advocating on behalf of the client. ”

Noam Toister Tells CTech How His Honeymoon Inspired The Founding Of His Company, And How You Bounce Back From The 40% Staff Reduction

Daniel Farber-Ball 15:2409.24.21

The traditional holiday season exodus out of Ben-Gurion airport will end next week, as many of those who braved the global pandemic and a possible quarantine will return home. Since the Covid-19 vaccine became a reality, it appears that more and more people, not just in Israel, are determined to travel, and no industry is happier to resume operations than travel and hospitality that have suffered, perhaps most of all, over the past 18 months or so.

“Before Covid we had a tremendous growth rate, but then Corona came along and we quickly realized that this wouldn’t be a short or simple event,” Bookaway.com co-founder and CEO Noam Toister told CTech. “Our sales fell and we had to lay off almost half of the company at the beginning of March, which was extremely difficult but also turned out to be the right decision because at the end of this month our sales fell to almost zero. ”

Bookaway CEO Noam Toister. Photo: Irad Netzer

Toister described this period as one of the worst of his life, as the company he founded in 2017 had to release around 40% of its employees. Bookaway specializes in booking land and sea travel. “If you are traveling through a country instead of staying in a city, depending on where you are, it can be extremely difficult to secure your travel plans online,” he said. “Sometimes it can be quite complicated to book your ticket, and what people end up doing is booking through their hotel or physically going to the bus station or ferry and buying their ticket in advance.” An experience like this during his honeymoon led Toister to create Bookaway.

“We were in Manila, and we wanted to see the northern rice terraces, it’s a World Heritage Site and all the tourists go there. So what people do is take a taxi to the bus station to buy their tickets, and it’s an hour and a half each way because of the traffic. This means that all the tourists on the bus lost a day in Manila, ”he said. “So after I got back to Israel, I got hold of an Israeli tourist agent and told him that I will send you reservations, you will go to the bus station to buy the tickets and email them to the clients. It was clear that we were on to something, so I developed it, first in the Philippines, then in other countries and continents. ”

“We have the potential to grow into a $ 10 billion business,” Toister said confidently. “Today, 7% of a tourist’s expenses are spent on trips by land or sea, not counting rental cars. This may be the last untapped travel vertical, and our platform is basically Booking.com for transportation. And the challenge is to work with these local businesses, mostly offline, and promote them through us, with all the right information.

The company’s growth potential was clear until early 2020, when the pandemic forced it to give in. However, despite the grim reality and initial shock of losing half of its staff, Bookaway has managed to stay on track. “Fortunately, at the time when Aleph was supporting us, we were able to keep half of the business and focus on our infrastructure, so that we could start as soon as tourism returned. It worked, and in fact, during Covid, we doubled the number of vendors we work with around the world. ”

Bookaway was also able get $ 35 million in a Series B round in July, buys three companies and is in the process of closing a fourth agreement. “After six, seven months, it was clear that the coronavirus was not going to go away overnight, and we had to decide whether, as a business, we were just going to wait or take initiative. So we contacted our competitors and saw an opportunity to buy some of it, ”Toister explained.

Today, the company offers reservation services in more than 100 countries and has approximately 160 employees worldwide, including approximately 60 in Israel, who are striving to achieve Toister’s goal of becoming the Booking.com of land and sea travel, in particular in the current and future Covid. reality. “My guess is that one of the outcomes of the coronavirus will be that customers will stay away from crowded places and look for alternatives,” he said. “You can see companies really trying to create safe experiences, but there is still no clear solution. We are seeing a growing demand for private commuting, which is a service we offer: renting a car and a driver, and more people are interested than ever before. ”

FAQs: South Florida hotels

When is the best time to visit South Florida?

While South Florida enjoys sunshine most of the year, the best time to visit is February through May. During these months, temperatures are cooler and crowds tend to decrease, although there is a peak in visitors during spring break.

During the summer months, the temperature and humidity skyrocket, and daily afternoon thunderstorms are common. The hurricane season in Florida begins on June 1 and lasts until the end of November, with August and September being the most active months.

From a weather point of view, November to January is also a good time to visit. Temperatures hover around 75 degrees, although it is not uncommon to experience a few days below 50 degrees when a cold front passes. But keep in mind that hotel prices tend to peak during the holiday months of November through January.

Do I have to book a room to visit the roof of a hotel?

Many of the hotels included in this list have rooftop bars and restaurants open to the public that don’t require an overnight hotel reservation, but most rooftop pools are for hotel guests only. Some hotels offer daily cabin rentals or a day pass through Resort Pass that includes access to the pool, spa, or other hotel amenities. Availability changes often, so always call ahead and ask.

How to get around South Florida

South Florida is a large area that encompasses three counties: Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe, although most locals consider towns in southern Palm Beach County like West Palm Beach to be part of South Florida. .

Visiting South Florida requires a car and some planning as traffic can be congested, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. While the public transportation system is mostly reliable in downtown areas, renting a car is the best way to explore all of South Florida. If you’re flying into Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach and staying close to your hotel, you can use taxis or rideshare apps to get around.

How to find a hotel with a rooftop?

Most hotels with a roof will list it on their hotel website, and third-party booking sites such as Booking.com and Hotels.com will usually include a roof in the hotel description or on the listing. hotel facilities. Additionally, the third-party booking site Kayak has a search filter to only search for properties with roofs.

Do hotel guests have priority on the rooftops?

It depends on the property. Most hotels limit pool areas to hotel guests or guests with day passes. Rooftops with a combined pool and restaurant accept exterior reservations, so restaurant reservations are advised upon check-in.

Indian start-up from budget hotel chain Oyo is looking to file an initial public offering as early as next week, people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch, joining a handful of companies in the world’s second-largest market that are trying to explore. public procurement.

The seven-year-old startup, founded by Ritesh Agarwal, 27, plans to raise up to $ 1.2 billion during the IPO, banking sources said, requesting anonymity to discuss private matters.

The aforementioned conditions could change slightly in the next few days, and the startup could take a few more days to complete the paperwork, people said.

Like Zomato and a handful of companies, including Paytm and PolicyBazaar, Oyo is considering listing on Indian stock exchanges, one person said.

The company, which counts SoftBank, Lightspeed Partners and Airbnb among its investors and was recently valued at $ 9.6 billion, had around $ 780 million to $ 800 million in the bank three months ago (according to Agarwal’s public commentary at a recent conference) and raised $ 660 million in debt in July.

Oyo, which recently raised around $ 5 million in a strategic Microsoft investment, operates in nearly three dozen countries. The startup, one of the South Asian nation’s most valuable, has developed some sort of operating system to help hoteliers accept digital reservations and payments. Oyo, using its technology stack, helps hoteliers determine the best price for a room and helps them discover and integrate with third-party hotel reservation services such as booking.com and MakeMyTrip.

Like most other players in the travel and hospitality industry, Oyo has been hit hard by the pandemic, but has recovered significantly in recent months.

Most of the startup’s income today comes from a handful of markets, including India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Europe, which have relaxed their foreclosure restrictions as more people walk away. get vaccinated.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV in July, Agarwal said the startup “was already operating as a state-owned company,” but declined to say whether it was looking to be listed anytime soon. The company has not commented on any IPO plans beyond that. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Awakeri farmer Viv Barr manages a farm stay on her runoff and encourages others to do the same.

Viv says her stay at the farm allows guests to see what life is like on a New Zealand farm, which can help shatter public misconceptions about the industry.

“So few New Zealanders these days have a direct connection to a farm, so you have no idea what’s really going on,” says Viv.

“Providing farm accommodation gives people a taste of something they may not have experienced before and gives people a different perspective.

“There has been a lot of negativity towards the agriculture industry. The only reprieve we got was during the first Covid-19 lockdown, when people saw us as an essential service – but that seems to have faded. “

The big subjects

The accommodation, called Secret Lake Farm Stay, is a self-catering apartment separate from the main part of Viv’s house and can accommodate one to three people.

In addition to taking care of the farm stay, Viv also moves livestock daily and teaches part-time at the Awakeri school.

Viv invites her guests into her own home for wine and conversation, and the opportunity to go to the farm to work alongside her.

“Some are just happy to hang out with the farm dog, but anyone enthusiastic enough can be given rubber boots and a jacket to go out and help me move the cattle in the morning.

“I have found that having people on the farm with me makes them feel comfortable enough to ask questions about some of the most controversial issues covered in the news. I have had conversations about live animal exports, bobby calves, waterway fencing, greenhouse gas emissions and many other topics.

“I’m really happy to have these discussions openly and allow people to form their own opinion.

“Those who come to the farm take pictures, ask questions, close the barriers for me and come in close contact with the animals. They witness how they are cared for, valued and respected.

“The guests then leave and share this experience with others – that’s exactly what the primary industry needs. “

Fourth generation farmers

The runoff coincides with a 115 ha, 400 cow dairy farm run by Viv’s son Matthew Barr.

“My son and daughter-in-law bought the dairy platform last month and this is the fourth generation in our family to work on this land. He has a daughter now – we would like to be a five generation farming family. Being in the same family for over 100 years, it is registered as Century Farm.

“We take care of the environment and our inventory and we have a long-term plan for that. “

Viv was introduced to farming at the age of 27 when she married her late husband – the country’s third generation farmer. She says she understands how people with no farming experience may not see the full picture.

“I remember being surprised at the level of commitment required – it’s really something you have to do every day,” says Viv. “My husband was born to be a farmer. I see her son is the same.

“My family feels really lucky to have grown up on a farm; When the children moved to Christchurch for college, they began to reflect on their unique experiences growing up, in relation to their peers. In particular, I remember my son’s surprise that we couldn’t just leave the mail in the mailbox and expect it to be picked up and delivered!

Viv Barr with a rating of 9.9 / 10 Booking.com.

Highest rated experience

Viv’s accommodation experience touches her guests – her farm stay was rated 9.9 from Booking.com this year. The rating comes from customer feedback and it took Viv five years to achieve it.

Only one other accommodation provider in the wider Bay of Plenty shares this rating, and only five other accommodation in New Zealand – motels, hotels, B & Bs and lodges included – are top rated.

“The most important thing about getting a good grade is delivering exactly what you promise. My farm stay is billed as “peace and quiet on top of a hill overlooking farmland, a lake with a backdrop of geothermal activity and Mount Putuaki”, and that’s what they get .

“I only know of a few other farm stays in our region.

“You don’t need to have a separate apartment – it can be a room in your house or even a glamping facility. Once you have an organized internet presence, it’s easy to make a farm stay work with your everyday life.

“I strongly encourage farmers to consider it.

Anyone seeking advice on operating a farm stay can email Viv via: barr.aj@xtra.co.nz

Almost all hotels in Cork City are fully booked for the Saturday Night Jazz weekend.

Next month will see a serious buzz on Leeside as the famous festival runs from October 22-25 – and begins on the same day most Irish restrictions are expected to be lifted.

The hugely popular weekend windfall will be the first time in more than 556 days that bars, restaurants and cafes will be able to open until the early hours of the morning – so it’s no surprise that everyone is scrambling to be a part of it.

At the time of writing, the majority of hotels in the city are booked on Saturdays, with only hotels in neighboring cities showing on Booking.com.

The Airport Hotel was the closest to the city with availability and a double room starts at € 223.

In contrast, a room there on Saturday 17th starts at € 124, which is almost € 100 cheaper.

Many hotels are available in the city on Friday, Sunday and Monday evenings, but demand for rooms has also pushed up prices.

The schedule for the big weekend is still being worked out according to the bosses, but they promise to broadcast it “in the next few weeks.”

One of the most important and longest-running events on the Irish music calendar, it was canceled in 2020 in accordance with government guidelines.

Commenting on this year’s festival, Rory Sheridan, Head of Partnerships at Diageo Ireland, said: “We are absolutely delighted to confirm that the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2021 will take place this bank holiday weekend in October, 22-25. October.

“This will be the first major festival in Ireland since the pandemic to take place, which is a milestone not only for musicians and the events industry which has been one of the hardest hit industries, but also for festival-goers who were expecting some good news.

“We look forward to announcing full festival details, including lineup over the next few weeks.”

Skift take

We have said throughout that membership of large hotel chains will go a long way in determining the trajectory of Tripadvisor Plus. Now it looks like big hotel brands can participate, but the subscription program is reduced and much less convincing.

Dennis schaal

In an astonishing reversal, just three months after the official launch of the Tripadvisor More Subscription program in the United States, Tripadvisor has caved in to hotel chain concerns and will move the offer from immediate hotel discounts when subscribers book accommodation to cash back after check-in.

The change, which begins to take shape in the fourth trimester, appears to be taking its breath away. Consumers got an average savings of $ 350 on initial hotel reservations, according to the company, after signing up for the program for an annual subscription of $ 99.

The problem with the current version of the program, in which hotels provided Tripadvisor with discounted rooms at lower rates than those publicly available on their websites, and did not pay commissions on bookings, is that Tripadvisor openly posted these. rates to site visitors to attract invite them to register with Tripadvisor Plus.

In an interview on Saturday, Sean Graber, CEO of Tripadvisor Plus, said potential subscribers want to see what they sign up for in advance.

However, despite the fact that Tripadvisor has attracted tens of thousands of hotels to participate in Tripadvisor Plus at the property and aggregator level, such as global distribution systems, the major hotel chains have balked at Tripadvisor thus openly posting discounted rates lower than their published retail prices. rates. Under “price parity” rules, hotels do not reduce the retail rates they offer to the general public through online travel agencies and on their websites to visitors who are not members of their loyalty programs. .

One of the reasons Tripadvisor is changing its business model is that the company calculated that it wouldn’t get enough hotel deals without the involvement of a large hotel chain to attract enough subscribers.

Room rates widely available elsewhere

With the model starting to be tested and deployed in its early stages in Q4, hotels pay Tripadvisor a negotiated commission and provide the company with their publicly available rates. Tripadvisor, in turn, will use these commissions to provide Bookers Plus cash back, or Tripadvisor funds, to their Tripadvisor accounts to use once they check-in at the hotel.

In theory, travelers could use these funds to spend at the hotel, purchase a tour, book another trip on Tripadvisor at any hotel, or receive the reward in the form of cash back.

For a while during the transition, Tripadvisor will be offering both initial discounts for some bookings and cashbacks for others, but the immediate discounts will be phased out.

Will the thrill be gone?

However, will Tripadvisor Plus have the same appeal when transitioning from the current instant gratification model – when booking a hotel for a week at a rate several hundred dollars lower than the rate on the website? from the hotel – having to wait for the trip to take place and get cash back at check-in?

There are plenty of cash back programs offered by credit card companies and online travel agencies, including HotelTonight and Booking.com, so the new Tripadvisor Plus would have a lot of competition. On the other hand, the substantial initial discounts in the initial version of the program were very attractive and the cash back may not be as large for a variety of reasons.

Another factor in the program’s eventual success or failure is the amount of Tripadvisor funds that the company would allocate to subscribers after booking may be less than the current immediate discount plan. Tripadvisor cash back will be heavily tied to the amount of hotel commission, and several of the major hotel chains regularly pay online travel agencies commissions below 10%, although they may also offer certain benefits to Tripadvisor bookers.

Challenging the idea that consumers might find cash backs less attractive than the initial discounts, Graber said in testing that the concept of the Tripadvisor funds ‘piggy bank’ resonated with consumers.

Tripadvisor had high hopes for Tripadvisor Plus

Subscription programs, including those offered by Inspirato for luxury accommodation and eDreams Odigeo for flights and hotels in Europe, appeared to be gaining traction across the travel industry.

As recently as last month, Tripadvisor co-founder and CEO Steve Kaufer told financial analysts that the company’s consumer base is so large – 100 million travelers browse the site each month “in time. normal ”- that Plus in the long run could register tens of millions of members.

“So it’s a small fraction of those travelers who sign up for our subscription product every month because they know they’re going to save money on those hundreds of thousands of hotels, those hundreds of thousands. attractions, ”Kaufer said Aug. 6 during the second quarter of Tripadvisor. call for earnings. “We end up adding millions of subscribers over the next few years with that same longer term opportunity in the tens of millions.”

But some will wonder if the revamped Tripadvisor Plus will have any legs, or if it will add to a long list of Tripadvisor tests and failures, including in vacation rentals, Tripadvisor instant booking, and a high-profile social feed.

“This change would be a big departure for Tripadvisor, which had previously pushed Tripadvisor Plus as offering ‘no evidence’ to customers and enticing them with best-in-class rates,” said Bernstein analyst Richard Clarke. “The new model makes sense and could offer good deals to customers, but will be in a competitive space with Booking.com, Hopper and Revolut also offering cash / credit back on bookings with a $ 99 fee as well. It could ultimately be a test if Tripadvisor Plus can be a full-service travel subscription offering, not just a discount club. “

Tripadvisor spokesperson Brian Hoyt argued that the Tripadvisor Funds program, which would include a form of ‘wallet’, would be compelling for hotels in that it goes beyond the usual transactional relationships between hotels. and online travel agencies. Under Tripadvisor Plus, consumers book hotels on Tripadvisor, but hotels process the reservation behind the scenes and get guest data.

Tripadvisor executives also claimed that the new Tripadvisor Plus offers a branding opportunity for hotels in that there could be joint communication from Tripadvisor and the hotel with bookings about the discount. in property money during their stays. In this way, the hotels could have an additional opportunity after booking to generate income.

Consumers who signed up for Tripadvisor Plus as part of the initial vision – initial discounts on bookings – will have the option to collect payment for their subscription although Tripadvisor did not immediately provide details of how this is done. will work.
